Agronomic performance of two generations (F12 and F13) of thirteen winter wheat composite cross wheat populations with differing cultivation histories in 2014/15. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Heinrich, Sven; Boening, Andreas; Elsner, Maren; Finckh, Maria R.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Nuijten, E.; Messmer, Monika; Baresel, Jörg Peter; Goldringer, I.; Péter, Mikó; Megyeri, Maria; Borgen, Anders; Rasmussen, Søren K.; Pearce, Bruce; Wolfe, Martin.
As environmental and agronomic conditions are heterogeneous between and within locations, diversity within varieties or crop populations should increase adaptability to the changing and variable range of growing environments. The additional pressure of plant genetic diversity loss, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity and ensuring a “wider adaptation” capacity for crop varieties (Döring et al., 2011). A winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) CCP was created by intercrossing 20 varieties in 2001, through collaboration with the Elm Farm Research Centre and the John Innes Institute. In 2005, a seed batch of the F4 was equally...

Auswinterung im Jahr 2011/12: Auswirkungen auf Winterweizen-Liniensorten und Winterweizenpopulationen in der F10 Organic Eprints
Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R..
TThree winter wheat composite cross (CC) populations were created in 2001 in the UK consisting either of 20 modern wheat parents (called A population), a subset of 12 high quality parents (Q), or a subset of 9 high yielding parents (Y). Seed of the F4 was transferred to the University of Kassel in 2005 and the populations were grown since then under organic and conventional conditions in well separated large (>100 m2) plots in two parallel sets (12 populations total) without conscious selection applied. In the conventional system fungicides and insecticides were not applied to expose the populations to natural pest and disease pressure. In addition, since the F8 two A populations have been maintained as broadcast sown populations without mechanical weed...

Evolutionary changes of weed competitive traits in winter wheat composite cross populations in organic and conventional farming systems. Organic Eprints
Bertholdsson, Nils-Ove; Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R..
Seedling root and shoot growth in hydroponics and allelopathic activity using a bioassay have been studied in very diverse populations of winter wheat grown under either organic or conventional conditions for a number of generations and subjected only to natural selection. The study was conducted on seeds from generation 6 (F6) and 11 (F11) from three composite cross populations (CCPs) produced by the Organic Research Centre in the UK. Since the F5 the populations were maintained under organic and conventional conditions in Germany. Two parallel populations were created from each CC, resulting in a total of six organic and six conventional CCPs. The sets of parallel populations showed similar evolutionary trends indicating that the observed changes are...

N-uptake in winter wheat pure line varieties and winter wheat composite cross populations in the F11 Organic Eprints
Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R..
Introduction In order to be able to adapt to changing environmental conditions, crop plants need a certain degree of diversity (Stevens 1942, Finckh 2008). The development of genetically diverse populations (composite cross populations, CCPs) instead of breeding entirely homogeneous pure line varieties by standard pedigree breeding methods is a strategy that aims at creating flexible varieties. Material and Methods Three winter wheat CCPs from the UK based on 20 modern wheat varieties (A) or a subset of either 12 high quality varieties (Q) or 9 high yielding parents (Y) were used. Since the F5 the CCPs have been grown under organic (O) and conventional (C) conditions in two parallel sets at the University of Kassel without artificial selection...

Performance of wheat composite crosses on station and on-farm Organic Eprints
Finckh, Maria R.; Heinrich, Sven; Brumlop, Sarah.
The F11 of 14 winter wheat composite cross populations (CCPs) were compared in replicated field trials to the mixture of the 20 parents and three commercial wheat cultivars in replicated field trials. In addition, one population was given to farmers for on-farm testing. In 2012 severe frost killed 16 out of the 20 parental varieties of the CCPs. In contrast, the mixture of these varieties and the CCP populations survived well. The CCPs with high yielding parents yielded still highest in the F12 and quality in the CCPs with high quality parents was highest. CCPs on-farm were comparable in performance with farmers reference varieties.

Populationszucht auf Anpassungsfähigkeit durch Diversität und partizipative on-farm Selektion am Beispiel Winterweizen Organic Eprints
Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R..

The effect of changing environmental conditions on composite cross winter wheat populations over six years from the F8 to the F14. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Haak, Jette; Brumlop, Sarah; Heinrich, Sven; Finckh, Maria R..
A lack of appropriate crop varieties specifically bred for the higher biotic and abiotic stresses experienced in organic and low-input systems, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity. The creation of CCPs using carefully chosen parental varieties, coupled with the ability of the populations to adapt to local environments means that these populations are well suited for low-input and organic agricultural systems (Phillips and Wolfe, 2005). COBRA (Coordinating Organic plant BReeding Activities for Diversity) aims to “support and develop plant breeding and seed production in Europe by increasing the use of plant material with High...

Vergleich der Adaptation von Winterweizenpopulationen mit unterschiedlichem Anbauhintergrund Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Haak, Jette; Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R.; Heinrich, Sven.
Thirteen winter wheat composite cross populations originating from one population but with differing histories over six years and three reference varieties were compared for yield, disease occurrence, as well as phenotypic diversity. The populations performed similarly and often better than the reference varieties in terms of yield and had lower incidence of disease. The populations are also phenotypically diverse and differ among each other, indicating that they have maintained a high degree of diversity over time and in varying locations, but most likely also diverged from each other.

Vergleich dreier unterschiedlich spezialisierter Winterweizen-Populationen unter ökologischen und konventionellen Anbaubedingungen in Deutschland und England Organic Eprints
Döring, Thomas F.; Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Wolfe, Martin; Finckh, Maria R..
Three Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) of winter wheat were created in 2001, one from crossing high baking quality parents (called QCCP), one based on high yielding parents (YCCP), and one created from both parent sets combined (YQ). All three CCPs were grown for several years in the UK and in Germany under conventional and organic cropping management. Based on properties of the different parent sets, yields were predicted to be highest in the YCCP and lowest in the QCCP, with the YQCCP in between. However, data showed that the YCCP was not significantly higher-yielding than the more generalist YQCCP in five out of six sites; in fact, the YQCCP even tended to outyield the YCCP on average over all sites, and this effect was significant at the German...

What is the SMARTest way to breed plants and increase agrobiodiversity? Organic Eprints
Brumlop, Sarah; Reichenbecher, Wolfram; Tappeser, Beatrix; Finckh, Maria R..
The evaluation and use of the vast diversity contained in plant genetic resources (PGR) is a main challenge for today’s plant breeding. The use of molecular markers has hugely increased the knowledge about genetic diversity and great hopes are raised about the potential of marker assisted selection [MAS; sometimes also termed SMART breeding (Selection with Markers and Advanced Reproductive Technologies)] to help increasing the use of PGR and maintaining crop genetic diversity. Another approach growing attention has been paid to over the past two decades and which also aims to increase variation in crops is evolutionary and participatory breeding (EPB). In this paper we discuss both the potential of marker-assisted breeding strategies and the potential of...

Yield stability analysis for three winter wheat composite cross populations under organic and conventional management over five years Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Heinrich, Sven; Finckh, Maria R..
Increasingly uncertain climatic conditions threaten the security and stability of agricultural systems (Østergård et al., 2009; Döring et al., 2011) and a better understanding of genotype x environment (GxE) interactions is needed to shift the agricultural focus from manipulating environments to grow crops to creating crops that fit into the environment (Østergård et al., 2009; Lammerts van Bueren et al., 2012). GxE interactions play a pivotal role in assessing yield stability of crops and the challenge of changing climatic conditions necessitates that new crop cultivars should have broad adaptability, stable agronomic performance over a range of environments and management systems and generally high yields (Akcura et al., 2006). The High genetic Diversity...
